Abstract:This study aims to explore the dynamics between variable payment strength and employee innovative behavior with status competitive motivation and creative selfefficiency
based on cognitive evaluation theory. The results suggest that there is 1) a curvilinear or reversed Ushape relationship between variable payment strength and employee innovative
behavior, 2) a significant difference while examining different type of status competitive motivation on employee innovative behavior, and 3) a threeway interaction among variable payment
strength, status competitive motivation and creative selfefficiency, which can improve employee innovative behavior greatly. Also, the study is helpful in providing theoretical foundation
and managerial implication to the issue regarding how to trigger innovative behavior by designing variable payment strength.
