Abstract: Objective To investigate the mediating effect of depression between body dissatisfaction and maternal-fetal attachment in late trimester pregnancy. Methods Convenient sampling was used to select 246 pregnant women in late trimester pregnancy who had routine prenatal checkups in the obstetric outpatient clinic in one tertiary grade-A hospital in Zhengzhou City from July 2022 to August 2022, and the investigation was conducted by using the Maternal Antenatal Attachment Scale, Body Understanding Measure Pregnancy Scale, and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Results The score of maternal-fetal attachment, body dissatisfaction and depression was 73.89±7.31, 47.91±7.47, and 8.09±3.25 respectively. Body dissatisfaction was positively associated with depression (P<0.001), negatively with maternal-fetal attachment (P<0.001), and maternal fetal attachment was negatively associated with depression (P<0.001). Depression played a partially mediating role between body dissatisfaction and maternal-fetal attachment, and the mediating effect accounted for 60.25% of the total effect. Conclusion Maternal depression, body dissatisfaction, and maternal-fetal attachment are closely related, and body dissatisfaction can indirectly affect maternal-fetal attachment through depression. The improved body dissatisfaction is conducive to the enhancement of maternal-fetal attachment and mental health.
