Abstract: Objective To explore the mediating effect of resourcefulness between family resilience and anticipatory grief in patients with advanced lung cancer. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 307 stage III and IV lung cancer patients hospitalized in 4 tertiary grade-A hospitals in Guangdong Province. All patients were investigated using a General Information Questionnaire, the Family Resilience Questionnaire, the Chinese version of Resourcefulness Scale, and the Preparatory Grief in Advanced Cancer Patients. A structural equation model was constructed to analyze the data. Results In this group of patients with advanced lung cancer, the total score of family resilience, resourcefulness and anticipatory grief was 70.71±14.19, 75.12±25.79, and 20.33±10.09, respectively. Family resilience was negatively correlated with anticipatory grief (r=-0.486, P<0.01); resourcefulness was negatively correlated with anticipatory grief (r=-0.602, P<0.01), and family resilience was positively correlated with resourcefulness (r=0.507, P<0.01). Mediation test showed that family resilience could negatively predict anticipatory grief (β=-0.309, P<0.01); family resilience and resourcefulness can negatively predict anticipatory grief(β=-0.314, P<0.01). Resourcefulness played a mediating role between family resilience and anticipatory grief, with the effect value of -0.314, accounting for 50.4% of the total effect. Conclusion Patients with advanced lung cancer have an above-average level of family resilience, a moderate level of resourcefulness, and a lower-average level of anticipatory grief. Both family resilience and resourcefulness can directly affect anticipatory grief in advanced lung cancer patients, with family resilience also indirectly affecting patients’anticipatory grief through resourcefulness. Medical staff should actively take measures to enhance family resilience of patients with advanced lung cancer and improve their level of resourcefulness to relieve their anticipatory grief.
