Development and sychometric testing of Nurse Resilience-related Practice Environment Factor Assessment Scale

Abstract: Objective To develop a nurse resilience-related practice environment factor assessment scale and to test its reliability and validity. Methods Based on the Health Services Workplace Environmental Resilience Model (HSWERM), combined with literature retrieval, semi-structured interview and group discussion, the item pool of the scale was constructed. The scale was modified by two rounds of expert letter consultation using Delphi method. Convenience sampling was used to select 280 nurses in a tertiary grade-A hospital in Beijing for the first investigation, and items were screened through item analysis. Convenience sampling was used to select 694 nurses in a tertiary grade-A hospital in Beijing for the second investigation. Reliability analysis and exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to construct the formal scale. Results The nurse resilience-related practice environment factor assessment scale included three dimensions of career support and development, practical support and development, and personal support and development. The scale consisted of 32 items, and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 73.376%. The model fit of the scale was good. The Cronbach’s α coefficient of internal consistency of the total table was 0.980; retest reliability 0.940; half-fold reliability 0.931; and content validity index of the total table 0.980. Conclusion The nurse resilience-related practice environment factor assessment scale has good reliability and validity, and can be used to evaluate the factors affecting mental toughness in nurses’ practice environment.
