Abstract: Objective To To systematically evaluate and integrate qualitative studies on nurses' cognition and experience of patients' death. Methods The databases including CNKI, WanFang Data, VIP, CBM, PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library and Web of Science were searched from the inception to April 2020 to collect related qualitative studies about nurses' cognition, feeling and experience of and attitude toward patients' death. The JBI Critical Appraisal Tool for qualitative studies (2017 edition) was used to evaluate the quality of studies, and the results were integrated by using meta-synthesis. Results Fourteen studies were collected; 115 findings were summarized into 8 new categories, and 4 synthesized results were obtained: nurses' perception of patients' death;multiple coping strategies for negative emotions; the impact of death experience on nurses and perceived challenges and needs at the time of death. Conclusion More attention should be paid to nurses' cognition and experience of patients' death, establish support and education systems to improve nurses' ability to coping death, and enhance the quality of end-of-life care.
