Emotional Labor Experience of Hospice Nurses: A Systematic Review of Qualitative Studies

Abstract: Objective To systematically review emotional labor experience of hospice nurses, and to provide theoretical basis for palliative and hospice care management. Methods We searched databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, ScienceDirect, CNKI, WangFang, VIP and CBM from the inception to June 24, 2021, to collect qualitative studies emotional labor experience of hospice nurses. The quality of included studies was evaluated with JBI Critical Appraisal Tool for qualitative studies in Australia and the results were integrated by integrating methods. Results A total of 11 studies were included and 43 complete findings were grouped according to their similarities into 7 categories, which resulted in 4 synthesized findings: real emotion; emotional acting; emotional storage and emotional exhaustion. Conclusion Hospice nurses have complex emotional labor and nursing managers should understand the positive role of emotional labor and take measures to promote emotional labor.
