Construction of National First-class Undergraduate Specialty and Its Effect: A Case Study of Nursing Major in Southern Medical University

Abstract: Objective To summarize the experience of national first-class undergraduate specialty construction of nursing major in Southern Medical University, and to provide reference for local universities. Methods Focusing on the requirements of national first-class undergraduate specialty, this paper analyzed the measures and effect of nursing specialty construction in Southern Medical University from the following 6 aspects, including teaching staff, curriculum construction, cultivation of students' clinical ability, humanistic quality, innovative ability, and students quality and stability of professional thinking. Results A total of 2, 273 nursing students graduated, with an employment rate of more than 97%, satisfaction of employer of more than 91% and passing rate of nursing qualification examination of 100%. The rate of changing the major in nursing students decreased annually. We completed 3 national first-class undergraduate courses and in 2019, the major of Nursing was in the first batch of construction site of national first-class undergraduate specialty. Conclusion The construction of first-class undergraduate specialty should be student-centered and output-oriented. Improvement of curriculum setting, faculty construction and practice teaching mechanism is beneficial to the construction of the major.
