Abstract On the basis of Grounded Theory, this study investigates the conceptualization and dimensions of sustainability-oriented human resource management. Further, a scale is developed following a rigorous procedure including exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The results show that the scale of sustainability-oriented human resource management consists of eighteen items under six dimensions: sustained protection of labor rights, sustained learning and development, sustained protection of employee health, sustained fulfillment of social responsibilities, sustained maintenance of relationship balance, and sustained development of management belief. This study also empirically examines the similarities and differences between sustainability-oriented human resource management, strategic human resource management and developmental human resource management, as well as their impacts on employee job performance and career sustainability. The results further indicate that sustainability-oriented human resource management is significantly different from the other two types of human resource management and has a stronger explanatory power for job performance and career sustainability.
