Abstract:Family business splitup, regarded as one common event, usually leads one family firm to be separated or even closed. Thus people may hold preconceptions that family business splitup will always negatively impact family business growth. This multicase study of six typical family business separation cases reveals that family business splitup may not inevitably lead to decadency, and especially under the strategic entrepreneurial orientation, family firms may also evolve into enterprising family through splitup and constructing strategic industrial linkages and competitive/cooperative relationship with each other. Theoretical insight from entrepreneurial spinoff helps to explore the more positive value of family business splitup on family entrepreneurship and sustainable growth.
