The authors reviewed 94 papers on leadership published in 8 top Chinese journals during the period of 2000~2009. Based on the model of indigenous research on leadership, the paper identifies the key problems in the research on leadership in China and found out that the majority of the studies on leadership in China were in the first and second phases of indigenous research. Such studies only validated (the first stage) or improved (the second stage) the extant leadership theories in the west, so they did little in the development of indigenous leadership theories in the Chinese context. Finally, it provides specific suggestions for future indigenous research on leadership in China.
