Abstract:The impact of environment uncertainty on organizations follows two kinds of logic, that is, efficiency mechanism and legitimacy mechanism. In this paper, we firstly summarize existing literatures about the definition and measure of environment uncertainty. After that, we review the literatures on how environment uncertainty affects organizations. We find that there are three aspects on which uncertainty has an impact: the institution level, strategy and structure. We also find both efficiency mechanism and legitimacy mechanism play important roles. Our work points out the direction of studies in the future, which are measuring the objective environment uncertainty, keeping a watchful eye on institution environment and using the institution theory to explain Chinese corporate governance practices.
