Best Evidence Summary for Role of Compression Stockings in Prevention and Treatment of Perioperative Venous Thromboembolism

Abstract: Objective To retrieve and integrate the available evidence of role of compression stockings in the prevention and treatment of perioperative venous thromboembolism and to provide reference for clinical practice. Methods With the 6S hierarchy of evidence-based resources, the databases and guideline websites were systematically searched, then the quality of the literature that met the inclusion criteria was evaluated by two researchers independently, and the evidence was extracted and summarized based on professional judgment. Results Nine articles were included, including 2 guidelines, 1 expert consensus, 4 best practices, 1 evidence summary, and 1 systematic review. Twenty-four pieces of best evidence were summarized from 7 aspects including indications, contraindications, pressure selection, length selection, size measurement, timing of wearing, and evaluation and observation. Conclusion Best evidence summary of role of compression stockings in the prevention and treatment of perioperative venous thromboembolism provides reference for decision-making for medical staff. It is necessary to select the evidence according to clinical practice and patients' wishes.
