Abstract: Objective To understand the experience and support needs of nurses as the second victim of inpatient suicide in general hospitals. Methods Convenient sampling method was used to select 731 nurses who experienced inpatient suicide from 8 tertiary general hospitals in Hubei Province in May 2019. The nurses were surveyed with a general information questionnaire and Inpatient Suicide Second Victim Experience and Support Needs Questionnaire. Results The item average score of experience of the second victim of inpatient suicide was 3.20±0.76, and that of support needs 3.46±0.44. Second victims with different working years had a statistically significant difference in terms of experience score (P<0.05). Support needs of second victims with different gender, working years, professional title and positions were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion Experience and support needs of the second victims of inpatient suicide are both in mediate or above level. Second victims of inpatient suicide are mainly manifested as negative psychological and physical experience. Those with 1 to 5 working years perform the highest experience score in the second victims of inpatient suicide. Female, those with 6 to10 working years and those with vice-director nurse or above and head nurses perform the highest scores of support needs in the second victims of inpatient suicide. It is recommended that nursing managers should provide targeted training, diversified support resources and actively establish support system for second victims.
