Clinical Experience of Nurses with Master's Degree: A Meta-synthesis

Abstract: Objective To synthesize clinical experience of nurses with master's degree. Methods We systematically searched qualitative studies about clinical experience of nurses with master's degree in databases including PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CNKI, VIP and WanFang from the inception to September 2019 and Meta-aggregation method was used to synthesize the results. Results Seventeen original qualitative studies were included and 63 findings were extracted, which were summarized into 10 categories and 3 themes, including positive and negative feelings in clinical work, high professional expectation and desire for emotional support and low professional value and desire for career planning. Conclusion For nurses with master's degree, there exist problems such as negative feelings, without unique career goals, and high professional expectations but low professional values during their clinical work. It is suggested that nurses with master's degree should actively change their attitude towards employment and be deeply involved in clinical practice. Nursing administrators are supposed to design, develop and implement appropriate training programs for these nurses, which then in turn might improve their professional identity.
