Spiritual Care Needs and Home Care Experience of Elderly Patients with Chronic Heart Failure

Abstract: Objective To explore in depth spiritual care needs and home care experience of elderly patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) in the mode of extended nursing, and to provide evidence for clinical care. Methods The phenomenological methods in qualitative research were used to interview 12 elderly patients with CHF and the Colaizzi phenomenological analysis method was used to analyze the data and extract the theme. Results Four themes of spiritual care needs were extracted including to regain the choice of power; to return to the role of unity; to promote dignity and to regain the meaning of life. Care experience covered the aspescts as follows: eager for 24-hour home visits and telephone access services; dynamic support from care coordinators and yearning for volunteer support activities. Conclusion Spiritual care needs of elderly patients with CHF should be satisfied during their home staying. Full play of the role of nursing coordinator, 24-hour dynamic counseling services from medical staff, and social support system will jointly help the elderly with CHF to maintain their health.
