Abstract:Ingratiation is one of the most widely used impression management strategies in organizational context. Drawing from power dependence theory, this study examines the influence mechanism and boundary conditions of leader narcissism on subordinates’ ingratiation. Hierarchical linear model (HLM) analysis was conducted using three-wave data collected from 289 employees of 81 groups to examine the hypothesis. Empirical results indicates that leader narcissism has a positively indirect impact on subordinate’s ingratiation through the mediation effect of impression management motive. Centralization moderates the relationship between leader narcissism and impression management motive. In addition, centralization exaggerates the mediation effect of impression management motive between leader narcissism and ingratiation, such that when the degree of centralization is higher, the mediation effect is stronger. The conclusions of this study have important theoretical implications for understanding the relationship between leader narcissism and subordinates’ ingratiation.
