Core competence and training demands on teaching in 1, 865 clinical nursing teachers: a national survey

Abstract: Objective To investigate the core competence of clinical nursing teachers in China and their training demands on teaching. Methods A cross-sectional survey of clinical nursing teachers in China was conducted by online questionnaire with multi-stage sampling. The survey tools included the Nurse Educator Core Competencies Scale based on the World Health Organization framework and a self-designed questionnaire on training status and teaching demands of clinical nursing teachers. Results A total of 1,865 nurses from 56 hospitals in 14 provinces were included in the survey. The score of all dimension of the Nurse Educator Core Competencies Scale based on the World Health Organization framework ranged from 75.01 to 85.82 and the total score was 82.08±17.32. Core competency was affected by professional title and systematic training of clinical teaching. Clinical nursing teachers had high demand for all kinds of training on teaching, and those with urgent need accounted for 60.97%~67.88%. Conclusion At present, the core competence of clinical nursing teachers in China is good, but further training is needed to improve the core competence comprehensively.
