Factors Influencing Risk of Falls in Elderly People with Sleep Disorders in Nursing Homes

Abstract: Objective To understand the factors influencing the risk of falls among elderly people with sleep disorders in nursing homes. Methods Convenience sampling was used to select the elderly (≥60) with sleep disorders in 7 nursing homes in Hebei province and they were surveyed by using general information questionnaire, Morse Fall Scale, Death Anxiety Scale and General Comfort Questionnaire. Results Among the 445 elderly people with sleep disorders in nursing homes, high risk of falling was observed in 220(49.4%) cases. Logistic regression analysis showed that high comfort, no walker and no lower limb disease were protective factors for the fall risk of elderly people with sleep disorders in nursing institutions (P<0.05), while using of hypnotics and high death anxiety were risk factors(P<0.05). Conclusion Elderly people with sleep disorders in nursing homes are with higher risk of falling. Active communication, psychological counseling, and health education are conducive to reducing the risk of falls.
