Abstract: Objective To explore the application effect of parallel medical records in nursing clinical teaching for nursing undergraduates. Methods Nursing Undergraduates of grade 2018 and 2019 having clinical practice in a tertiary grade-A hospital in Liaoning Province were selected and divided into control group and observation group. Conventional clinical practice was conducted in the control group. In the observation group, additional to conventional clinical practice, students received standardized training and were required to write parallel medical records to record the patients' stories, and their experience and feelings. They also shared the stories in their parallel medical records and their writing experience then extracted the theme. The Jefferson Sympathy Scale-Nursing Understudy Version and the Therapeutic Understudy Communication Aptitudes and Demeanor Scale were used to assess the teaching effect in the two groups. Results The total score of sympathy and the score of perspective taking, emotion care, and empathy in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). The score of positive attitude toward communicative skills in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). Three themes of empathy, attitude and skill were extracted from the experience report of parallel medical record. Conclusion Parallel medical records in clinical teaching is effective for promoting the empathy and communication competence of nursing undergraduates thus to improve the teaching effect of clinical practice.
