Caring Bank-based Volunteer Care of the Elderly Program for Medical and Nursing College Students

Abstract: Objective To construct a voluntary care of the elderly program and conduct experience research based on the volunteer group of medical college students, to promote the sustainable development of volunteer service in colleges and universities, and to break the bottleneck of the shortage of elderly care team. Methods Literature research and expert consensus were used to preliminarily construct the volunteer care of the elderly program for medical college students based on the “Caring Bank” management system and conduct an experience study. Sixteen volunteers participating in the volunteer service were selected by purpose sampling method to conduct semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed by Colaizzi seven-step method and themes were extracted. Results Three major themes and six sub-categories were extracted: harvest and achievement, confidence and persistence, growth and reflection. Conclusion The participation of medical college volunteers in elderly care services is effective for making up for the shortage of elderly caregivers, improving the quality of elderly care and effectively cultivate social responsibility sense of medical college students, providing reference for the development of elderly care cause and college education in China.
