Development and Validation of Self-management Scale for Neurogenic Bladder Patients

Abstract: Objective To develop a self-management scale for neurogenic bladder patients, to test its reliability and validity and to provide effective method to self-management of neurogenic bladder patients. Methods After literature review and semi-structured interview, the initial self-management scale for neurogenic bladder patients was formed with Delphi expert consultation and pilot investigation. Total of 128 patients with neurogenic bladder were selected to perform the item analysis for the provisional scale. 396 patients with neurogenic bladder were surveyed to test the reliability and validity of the final scale. Results The final scale consisited of 3 dimensions and 29 items. The Cronbach’s α coefficient and content validity index（S-CVI）of the total score was 0.725 and 0.900 respectively and 2-week test-retest reliability was 0.790. Seven common factors were extracted from the exploratory factor analysis, and the cumulative variance contribution rate of the three dimensions was 62.004%,62.366% and 67.142% respectively. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed good fit of the model. Conclusion The developed scale has good reliability and validity and can be used as an assessment tool for self-management ability of neurogenic bladder patients.
