Abstract This study reviewed 92 articles published in 19 English journals and 32 articles published in 9 Chinese journals between 1984 and 2016. The authors proposed a review framework by differentiating the antecedents of opportunism as promoting factors, inhibiting factors, and inconsistent factors, and defining the outcomes of opportunism as economic performance, relationship performance and response behaviors of the channel members. The authors indicated the inconsistent results in the extant research and explained the possible reasons, such as the differences of research context, definition and operationalization of constructs, and research design. Finally, we proposed several promising directions for further research.
