Abstract Using two sectors model, it is found that pollution may first increase and then decrease with the growing of R&D, and the government’s relevant policies will significantly influence the environment. Then by using the spatial-econometric analysis tools, it is found that R&D investment’s impact on the environment effect presents inverted U-shaped relationship, the increase of R&D deteriorates environmental quality in China now, and there would be a turning point in the long run. It is concluded that China’s R&D is inconsequently allocated, clean energy technology is being developed slowly, environmental pressure from population still exists, and it should be combined with market and government Intervention to coordinate the relationship among economics, population and environment.
