Abstract  Based on the identification of market angle, 13 barriers were defined from the construction market regarding BIM technology adoption, and an ISM evaluation was used to establish a multi-level hierarchical structure model of obstacle factors. It was followed by a MICMAC analysis to determine the dependence and driving force of each obstacle, and the key factors of driving force in the construction market were found. Combined with the results of ISM and MICMAC analysis, the similarities and differences of the barriers in the construction market between China and Italy were compared. The results show that: BIM education and training and BIM technical personnel are currently the two largest driving forces in the China’s construction market. In contrast, BIM standards are the largest driving force in the Italy construction market.
