| Must the Industry Leader be Innovation Leader as Well? Evidence from Chinese Entrepreneurs |

Abstract Innovation is an important way to improve firms’ performance. How to develop product innovation effectively and produce better performance is an important decision that entrepreneurs have to make, because it affects the survival and growth of firms. Governments around the world would like to support firms’ innovation activities to improve national economic profits. As a result of it, how to allocate the innovation resources to the firms, which kinds of firms should get more resources, big firms/industry leaders or small firms/new ventures? Drawing on a representative sample of 1 547 Chinese firms across all industries, the empirical results find that there is significant positive correlation between entrepreneurs’ industry status and firms’ product innovation. In addition, the positive relationship of entrepreneurs’ industry status and product innovation is stronger for firms with high learning orientation and concentrated leadership structure.
