The Effect of the Interplay between Business Model Design and Organizational Complexity on Organizational Adaptation

Abstract  This article uses the metaphor of “adaptive agent”, “adaptation create complexity” and other concept of complex adaptive system and combines the theory of strategic management, to make an empirical study on how organizational complexity plays a mediated moderation role on the process of adaptability of business model design. The results show organizational complexity plays a negative moderation on the relationship between efficiency centered business model design and structural complexity of business model, and plays a positive moderation between the relationship of novelty centered business model design and structural complexity of business model ; there exists negative correlation relationship between diversity of trade agents and simple adaptability , and significant positive correlation relationship among diversity of trade agents, flexibility of trading rules and complex adaptability. Structural complexity plays mediated moderation role on diversity of trade agents between efficiency business model and simple adaptability. Organizational complexity plays a mediated moderation role on structural complexity of business model between novelty centered business model and complex adaptability. The conclusion is of great theoretical and practical significance in helping the enterprises to design the business model to adapt to the complex environment based on organizational complexity.
