Abstract Base on an intensive examination of the literature on guanxi and some related theories, we propose some potential possibilities for guanxi researchers to break the dilemma. Firstly, we clarify the concept of guanxi, exhibit findings about the antecedents and consequences of guanxi. Then, we elaborate on how we can define guanxi as a unique combination of relational structure and social norms in Chinese context. As a conclusion, we compare guanxi with the theories of social capital, social exchange and trust, and put forward some future directions for guanxi research.
