Abstract Based on effectuation theory and team process theory, this study examines the relationship between effectuation and startup’s new product development performance, and further addresses how an entrepreneurial team’s cohesion (social cohesion and task cohesion) accentuates or attenuates the above relationship. The findings are as follows: effectuation has a positive effect on startup’s new product development performance; strong social cohesion among an entrepreneurial team strengthens this positive relationship, while strong task cohesion weakens the relationship. These results show that compared with task cohesion, social cohesion can better amplify the value of effectuation in improving startups’ new product development performance.
