Abstract Focusing on the level of innovation network, this study explores the effect of the asymmetry and network invulnerability of in-outbound open innovation on the network invulnerability from the perspective of innovation openness, and investigates the moderating effect of intra-cluster cohesiveness. Using the hierarchical regression method, The empirical analysis of 138 patent citation networks in the field of new energy industry shows that the asymmetry of the breadth and depth of the in-outbound open innovation has a negative impact on innovation network invulnerability. Second, the asymmetry of in-outbound open innovation also negatively affects innovation network invulnerability. Third, the cohesiveness of technology clusters plays a negative moderating role in the relationship between the asymmetry of innovation breadth/depth of the in-outbound open innovation and network invulnerability.
