Abstract Based on the institutional logic view, this study develops a research framework and explores the growth mechanism of social enterprises by indepth case studies. The findings show that under the mutual influences of market logic, charity logic, and rational choice logic, social enterprises achieve growth at economic level and social level by obtaining market legitimacy, alliance legitimacy, and relationship legitimacy. Meanwhile, different types of social enterprises are different in patterns of legitimacy and degrees of growth due to the effects of various combinations of institutional logics.
