Abstract This paper outlines four great challenges to a more systematic approach to human resource management in China. Of these, the first and most difficult is to link the strategy or approach to managing human resources with a firm’s business strategy. HR strategy refers to the processes, decisions, and choices an organization makes regarding its human resources and how they are organized. After presenting a conceptual model that shows the relationship of HR strategy to the broader strategy of a business, the paper shows how that model was actually applied in the largest food marketing and distribution company in North America, SYSCO Corporation. The paper concludes by emphasizing that the alignment of HR and business strategy serves as the basis for addressing each of the three other great challenges to HRM in China.
