Abstract Under the metafrontier method, an analysis and comparison have been made of the regional disparities in totalfactor energy efficiency throughout China during the year 2000 to 2008. Additionally, a quantitative TGRbased analysis has been made on the technology gap of energy utilization. Subsequently, a test is utilized for investigating totalfactor energy efficiency’s convergence of overall country and three major areas. Empirical conclusions drawn are as follows: i) the overall level of China’s totalfactor is on the low side and its regional disparities are significant during the sample period and there exists tremendous room for energy conservation and emissions reduction. Additionally, there are significant gaps on production technology among China’s three major areas; ii) there are not convergences of totalfactor energy efficiency among overall China and its three major areas, and the risk of the widen gap of totalfactor energy efficiency among China’s provinces still exist.
