Qualitative study on learning experience of nursing undergraduates in synchronous classes of MOOC Westbound Program

Abstract: Objective To investigate the learning experience of nursing students in western universities attending synchronous classes of MOOC Westbound Program. Methods A descriptive phenomenological method was used to conduct semi-structured in-depth interviews among 15 nursing students, and the data were analyzed by Colaizzi's seven-step analysis. Results According to the interview data, 5 themes and 6 sub-themes were summarized, including extending thanks for MOOC Westbound Program; stimulating rich emotional experiences; creating active classroom atmosphere; promoting personal growth (broadening professional horizons; enhancing comprehensive capabilities, and increasing professional identity), and problems existing in synchronous classes (poor network equipment; single form of interaction, and positive and negative reviews). Conclusion The synchronous classes enjoy a high recognition and stimulate rich emotional experience. They achieve remarkable teaching effect, which is helpful to promote the personal growth of nursing students.
