Development of Health Literacy Scale for middle-aged and young T2DM patients and its validation

Abstract: Objective To develop a health literacy scale for middle-aged and young T2DM patients and test its reliability and validity. Methods Based on a three-level health literacy model of functionality, interactivity, and criticality, an initial scale was formed through literature review, expert consultation, and pre survey. A total of 591 middle-aged and young patients with T2DM were selected to test its reliability and validity. Results The scale consisted of 3 first-level, 9 secondary-level, and 37 third-level indicators. The cumulative variance contribution rate was 69.636%. The Cronbach alpha coefficient 0.963; the split-half reliability 0.931. The overall content validity of the scale was 0.945, and the content validity index of each item was 0.875~1.00. Conclusion The health literacy scale for middle-aged and young T2DM patients has good reliability and validity, and can be used as a tool for measuring the health literacy of middle-aged and young T2DM patients.
