Abstract  There are abundant contingency management thoughts in traditional culture. However, they are still unfamiliar to the domestic management academia. Based on the traditional classics, this study makes a theoretical research on the contents, characteristics and management value of traditional contingency theory compared with Western contingency theory using the comparative research method. The research shows that, compared with the Western contingency theory, the traditional contingency thought is essentially a supplement to the daily rules,is strictly restricted by morality and justice, and emphasizes the sages’ importance. Besides, the traditional contingency theory highlights the spiritual aspect of human beings and belongs to the category of practical wisdom rather than theoretical knowledge. These characteristics also make it aneffective supplement to the Western contingency theory in many aspects, and can effectively solve difficult problems such as “what is the purpose” “what should be done” “how to do” and so on.
