Abstract  There are many discussions on ‘what is theory’ and ‘what is theoretical contribution’ in western management community, but we are still lost. From a spectrum-form understanding on the theory and the author’s own framework of theory-building, this study illustrates how a few Chinese scholars made the theoretical contribution of indigenous management research by their works which separately showed their sense of problem, thick description, context interpretation, constructs and mechanism building. The author argues Chinese scholars can offer more influential indigenous theory that helps us know deeper on ourselves only if we live in our lifeworld rather than rely much on the western concepts and literature.
