Abstract Transitional China is one of the best fields for building institutional complexity theory. We first review the origin of institutional complexity theory from institutional theory, and propose the key assumptions (i.e., heterogeneity, dynamic and historical dependence of institutional logics) and key concepts (i.e., multiplicity of institutional logics, and Institutional Polycentrism) in institutional complexity theory. Then we review two main streams in the literature, namely, how the institutional complexity in field emerges, and how an organization interprets and responses to institutional complexity. Finally, we propose three main directions for Chinese management studies.
