Abstract To explore the connotation of user engagement with smart wearable health technologies (SWHTs), this study adopts a “qualitative-quantitative” sequential mixed-methods design: In the qualitative phase, we identify the structural dimension of user engagement with SWHTs by combining the in-depth interview and the grounded theory research; In the quantitative phase, we develop the measurement scale by following the standard paradigm of developing formal instrument items. The results show that user engagement with SWHTs is comprised of six dimensions. Of them, cognitive engagement, emotional engagement, behavioral engagement and social engagement are consistent with extant literature albeit with different contextual meanings. Sensory engagement and philosophy engagement can reflect novel human-computer interaction phenomena in SWHTs settings. The formal scale consists of 19 items from the six dimensions above. Through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, the reliability and validity of the scale are satisfactory.
