Abstract Based on data collected from 316 manufacturing enterprises as samples, this study explores the impact of ambidextrous alliances (including exploratory alliance and exploitative alliance) on firm’s capability reconfiguration (CR), and also explores the moderating effects of knowledge aggregation on the above relationships. The result shows that exploratory alliance has an inverted U-shape impact on capability substitution, but has a negative impact on capability evolution. In contrast, exploitative alliance has a negative impact on capability substitution but has an inverted U-shape impact on capability evolution. Moreover, knowledge coupling has a positive moderating effect on the relationship between exploratory alliance and CR, but negatively moderates the relationship between exploitative alliance and CR. Knowledge cohesion has a negative moderating effect on the relationship between exploratory alliance and CR, but positively moderates the relationship between exploitative alliance and CR.
