Abstract This paper explores innovation issues in family business based on social learning theory by underlining the owning family feature as antecedence. Specifically, findings of multilevel analysis using Mplus software based on 376 employees from 151 firms show that: First, family adaptability strengthens innovative behavior of non-family employees; Second, psychological empowerment plays mediation role in the main effect; Third, family ownership weakens the positive relation between family adaptability and psychological empowerment, which indirectly influences employees’ innovative behaviors.
