Symptom Clusters of Lung Cancer Patients with Palliative Care and Its Association with Quality of Life

Abstract: Objective To explore symptom clusters of lung cancer patients with palliative care and its effect on quality of life. Methods Totally 144 lung cancer patients receiving palliative care from April to August 2018 in 3 tertiary grade A hospitals were selected by convenience sampling and they were surveyed by using general information questionnaire, Chinese version of Anderson Symptom Assessment Scale, Lung Cancer Specific Symptom Module and Lung Cancer Patients Quality of Life Scale FACT-L. Results Six symptom clusters were identified for lung cancer patients with palliative care and the contribution rate of cumulative variance was 69.161%. Six symptom groups were neuro-related symptoms, perceived symptoms, psychological symptoms, fatigue-related symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms and specific symptoms of lung cancer. There was negative correlation between the scores of neuro-related symptoms, psychological symptoms, specific symptoms of lung cancer group and the quality of life(r=-0.227, -0.321, -0.343; all P<0.05) and between perceived symptoms, fatigue symptoms and gastrointestinal symptoms and quality of life（r=-0.448, -0.444, -0.449; P<0.05）. Conclusion There are many symptoms in lung cancer patients with palliative care, which aggravate the symptoms of patients and affect the quality of life of patients. Medical staff should pay attention to the occurrence and development of symptoms, and take reasonable intervention measures from the perspective of symptom management to improve the quality of life of patients.
