Effect of Action Research on Nursing Skill of Intestinal Stoma in Surgical Nurses

Abstract: Objective To investigate the effect of action research (AR) on nursing skill of intestinal stoma in training for surgical nurses in colorectal ward. Methods An AR-based nursing skill training of intestinal stoma was carried out from January to August 2019. After problem-identifying and an complete AR cycle including planning, action, observation and reflection, a systematic training integrating theory with practice was provided for nurses in colorectal ward. Nursing skill of intestinal stoma including theoretical knowledge, colostomy bag change and how to deal with complications induced by stoma was assessed and patient satisfaction was evaluated. Results After two cycles of training, nurses performed better in terms of theoretical knowledge, colostomy bag change and how to deal with complications induced by stoma and it was statistical significant (P<0.05). Conclusion Systematic and standardized training based on AR is conductive to the improvement of nursing skill of intestinal stoma and patient satisfaction.
