Abstract: Objective To investigate the status of breast cancer patients' health literacy and fear of cancer recurrence, and to explore the correlation. Methods A total of 110 female breast cancer patients in a tertiary grade-A hospital in Jiangxi Province were investigated by using general information questionnaire, Chinese version of Simplified Fear of Disease Progression Scale and Health Literacy Scale for Chronic Disease Patients. Pearson correlation analysis was used to test the correlation between health literacy and fear of cancer recurrence. Results Score of health literacy of breast cancer patients was 88.32±10.41 and that of fear of cancer recurrence 28.98±6.11. The patient's health literacy level was negatively correlated with cancer recurrence fear (r=-0.773, P<0.01). Conclusion Health literacy of breast cancer patients is at a medium level, while the cancer recurrence fear is at a low level. Health literacy is negatively correlated with cancer recurrence fear, indicating that the lower the health literacy level, the higher the cancer fear level. It is suggested that health literacy level of breast cancer patients could be promoted by targeted information support, communication and interact with outside world, and psychosocial intervention.

Key words: breast cancer, health literacy, fear, fear of recurrence
