Abstract: Objective To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of drinking a small amount of ice water to relieve thirst in patients with oral tracheal intubation based on the safety protocol for thirst management. Methods A total of 76 patients with oral tracheal intubation were recruited in this study and randomized into control group and observation group with 38 cases in each group. A small amount of ice water from the mouth was provided for patients in the observation group based on routine care but patients in the control group were moisturized lips with a cotton swab dipped in water based on routine care. The NRS and the rate of cough and aspiration of the two groups were compared. Results Before the intervention, there was no significant difference in baseline data and thirst degree between the observation group and the control group(P>0.05).After the intervention, NRS of observation group was 3.30±0.88, lower than that of control group 6.50±1.25(P<0.01). There was not statistical significance on the rate of cough and aspiration between two groups(P>0.05). Conclusion Drinking a small amount of ice water can safely and effectively relieve thirst in patients with oral tracheal intubation, which would not increase the incidence of cough and aspiration.

Key words: safety protocol for thirst management, ice water, oral tracheal intubation, thirst, aspiration
