Correlation Analysis of Clinical Nurses' Evaluation of Head Nurse's Leadership Behavior and Working Environment Perception: A 2,291-case Study

Abstract: Objective To investigate the status of leadership behavior of head nurses and the working environment perception of clinical nurses in grade-A hospitals of Hubei province, and to explore the correlation between the two. Methods A total of 2,291 clinical nurses from 18 tertiary grade hospitals in Hubei province were investigated by the Leadership Practice Inventory and Perceived Nursing Work Environment-Chinese. Results The score of the head nurse's leadership behavior was 122.96±21.45, and that of clinical nurses' work environment perception 126.44±18.65. There was correlation between the total score of the head nurse's leadership behavior and clinical nurses' work environment perception (r=0.536, P<0.05). Conclusion The clinical nurses' score of the head nurse's leadership behavior is at a high level, and their perception of the working environment is at a medium level. It is suggested that nursing managers such as head nurses should attach importance to authorization management, formulate phased goals, jointly inspire visions, and improve the perception level of head nurses' leadership behavior, so as to improve nurses' perception of working environment and improve the quality of nursing work.
