Abstract

To systematically examine the species differences between feline and canine and their implications for consumer behavior, this study constructs an integrative framework based on 704 articles indexed in Web of Science and CNKI from 1990 to 2025. Employing a literature review method, this study elaborates on the species differences between feline and canine across four dimensions, namely physiological traits, behavioral characteristics, personality attributes, and cultural symbolism. Furthermore, drawing upon psychological distance theory, psychological ownership theory, and attachment theory, this study analyzes the theoretical mechanisms through which feline- canine differences shape different types of consumer behavior. On this basis, this study synthesizes the effects of feline-canine differences on pet-related consumption, individual human consumption, and prosocial consumption, while also identifying the moderating roles of pet-specific characteristics, individual consumer attributes, and cultural contexts. By identifying gaps in the existing literature, this study proposes promising future research directions, including digital technology empowerment, symbolic value construction, demographic structural changes, and local cultural contexts.
