Abstract Based on reviewing the existing concepts of distributed innovation, this article presents a general definition of distributed innovation, and points out the significance of distributed innovation knowledge networks and the obstacles for network construction. According to two dimensions of management support and main benefit, distributed knowledge networks are divided into four types of hobby network, professional learning network, best practices network and business opportunity network. Then, based on the investigation of domestic enterprises and the study on foreign literature, this paper suggests four important steps for building a distributed creating knowledge network, which are focusing the knowledge network, creating the network context, routinizing network activities and leveraging network results.
