Abstract Based on social exchange theory and moral disengagement theory, with the leader-member exchange and moral disengagement as the mediators, the reciprocal belief and moral identity as the moderators, this study uses scenario experiment and questionnaire survey methods to explore how and when benevolent leadership influence on workplace deviance in Chinese organizational context. The results show that:①benevolent leadership discourages work deviance through leader member exchange but promotes work deviance through moral disengagement;②moral identity moderates the positive relationship between benevolent leadership and moral disengagement, such that this relationship is stronger for those with lower moral identity;③reciprocal belief moderates the positive relationship between benevolent leadership and leader member exchange, such that this relationship is stronger for those with higher reciprocal belief.
