Abstract To understand the underlying reasons why firms may get involved in misconduct and to identity the future research directions and opportunities, this study conducted a systematic review on existing literature published on important academic journals at home and abroad. We tried to summarize the theories or theoretical views used in prior studies; to identify the important drivers of corporate misconduct from three levels including executive characteristics, firm characteristics, and external environment; to compare the different focuses between studies conducted in China and in non-China contexts; and to pick up the limitations for future research directions.
