Abstract Based on the perspective of legitimacy spillovers and organizational field governance, two competing sets of hypotheses about the compartmentalizing mechanism are proposed to explore“how platform enterprises of business incubation avoid being harmed by startups in the process of sharing legitimacy to them?” The empirical research results show that the compartmentalizing mechanism can be used as a moderating factor to alleviate the damage to the legitimacy of platform enterprises of business incubation caused by the low-level innovation willingness or misconduct of startups. However, the compartmentalizing mechanism cannot directly restrict the low-level innovation willingness or misconduct of startups to protect the legitimacy of platform enterprises of business incubation.
